Now that you’ve seen it, what did you think? Opening in theaters this weekend is Kevin Smith’s ninth feature film, called Cop Out, following Zack and Miri Make a Porno from 2008. It’s a modern day buddy cop comedy in the same vein as the Lethal Weapon movies of the 80’s, but is it as good those? Cop Out got slammed by critics and has a 19% on Rotten Tomatoes, but were the critics just unable to enjoy the humor? How are Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan as partners? Is it as good as Kevin Smith’s past few films or worse? If you’ve seen it, then leave a comment below and let us know what you thought of Kevin Smith’s Cop Out.

To fuel the fire, I really wanted to like this movie, but ultimately I couldn’t. I didn’t understand what movie was trying to do – make a mockery of the buddy cop comedies of the 80’s or be a modern version of an 80’s buddy cop comedy, funny in its own way? Unfortunately it just felt like a mess and although I enjoyed a few parts of it, overall it wasn’t that good. All of the good jokes were spoiled in the trailer and everything else in it wasn’t funny. I didn’t find myself laughing much and wasn’t otherwise impressed with the characters or anything. However, I will say I was impressed to see that everything in the story connected together so well.

Last week, Disney kicked off a big viral game for Tron Legacy that resulted in the unveiling of this special event held today (Saturday) in five major cities around the world. The tickets were given out on a site called Pit Cell and the event sold out within 20 seconds. Our event in LA was hosted at The Bridge in IMAX 3D. Right at the beginning, the lights went down, the two minute trailer premiered, and then the lights came up. But the audience demanded they show it again, so to allow time for the print to be rewound, they brought up Tron Legacy director Joe Kosinski and original Tron director Steve Lisberger for a quick Q&A as well.

I don’t have a transcript of the Q&A (HitFix does), but it was great to see these two collaborating so much. More often than not we don’t see creators of the original working on sequels like this that are hitting some 28 years after the original, but Lisberger seems intimately involved and has a lot of faith in Kosinski. The trailer itself looked incredible in 3D. It’s a full two minute trailer with lots of footage inside and outside of the Tron computer world. It starts off with Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) in the real world and we get to see Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner) talking to him about how his dad disappeared. We also get to see some sweet shots of Michael Sheen, Olivia Wilde, Beau Garrett, and of course, Jeff Bridges! I got chills watching.

I’m not going to describe the entire trailer to you, because it’ll be online in a few days and I prefer to just let it speak for itself. I actually can’t wait to watch the it again over and over. I’ve heard that we’ll have to work through another viral game to get to the trailer online, so stay tuned. I don’t know about everyone else, but Tron Legacy is now my most anticipated movie of 2010 hands down. Everything about it is perfect – the world they created, casting, characters, the way it looks, even Daft Punk scoring it. I’m unabashedly excited. I think some people had way too high of expectations for this event. It’s not due out until December 17th, so we’ve got a long way to go, a 10 full months, and that means there’s plenty more to come (both virals and footage). This was the first time we’ve ever seen any REAL footage from Tron Legacy anyway. They still have a lot of work to do and a long way to go which means there’s more we’ll eventually see. So if there are any of you that are let down by the fact that there was this much of a build up for only a two minute trailer, I’m certain you’ll forget all about this by the time the movie comes out. After first debuting at the Cannes Film Festival some six months ago, Alejandro Amenábar’s Agora has finally been picked up for distribution in the US by Newmarket Films (who has released other indies like Death of a President and Passion of the Christ). Agora is an ambitious $60 million film that tells the story of religious conflict in Roman-governed Alexandria as the Christian and pagans battle, often violently, for religious and intellectual supremacy. The period story centers on he enlightened thinker Hypatia as well as both her philosophical and romantic conflicts. Rachel Weisz stars as does Max Minghella and Oscar Isaac.

“Alejandro Amenábar has crafted a film that not only offers a visual spectacle but also deals with religious intolerance in a way that makes this film feel modern and relevant even though it is set centuries ago,” said Exclusive Media Group (who recently bought Newmarket) co-chairmen Chris Ball in a statement. “We are proud to be the ones taking this film to US audiences who will find that this film offers epic storytelling at its finest.” It’s not a good sign that this film has taken this long to sell, especially considering how much it cost to even make. However, I’ve been a big supporter of it ever since I saw it in Cannes (read my review).

Agora is not necessarily an incredible movie, but it is a good one, with beautiful set design and a great lead performance by Rachel Weisz. She was even getting Oscar buzz at Cannes, but I’m not sure if that’ll hold over in this release as well. Newmarket Films will put out the film in the first half of 2010. I don’t know what this is, but it looks frickin’ awesome! Twitch has found a handful of new photos from an upcoming Thai film called Bang Rajan 2 that’s actually the sequel to a little-known film from 2000 called Bang Rajan. The original is a period epic about a group of outnumbered villagers standing up to a stronger military force. It was apparently pretty damn good, despite not getting too far outside of Thailand. However, nine years later and they’re back with a sequel which, this time, is being produced by Phranakorn Film, one of Thailand’s biggest production companies and distributors. With that said, you need to see these photos!

I can’t see, to find a plot synopsis for Bang Rajan 2 anywhere, but that doesn’t matter because it probably wouldn’t make much sense anyway without seeing the original. That said, I’m sold based off of these photos alone, which look completely badass (visually and physically). Twitch says to “expect some sort of fusion of styles” as the teaser they’ve got has some action inspired by 300, yet these photos are “both very impressive and very naturalistic in their approach.” If you’re interested, you can pick up the first Bang Rajan on DVD on Amazon while waiting for this one to make its way across the Pacific.
